The Okaloosa County School District (OCSD) is proud to announce that all district schools have renewed their status as Florida Purple Star Schools of Distinction, demonstrating a districtwide commitment to helping military-connected students navigate transitions and achieve success in their educational journey. Additionally, OCSD is a Florida Purple Star District of Distinction, one of only five school districts in the state to earn this honor. With one of the largest populations of military-connected students in Florida, the Okaloosa County School District remains steadfast in its mission to provide academic excellence, social-emotional support, and stability for families who serve.

“With some of the strongest ties to our nation’s military installations, including Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, and Duke Field, this recognition holds special meaning for Okaloosa County,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “Our educators, staff, and community partners take great pride in serving military-connected students. We are deeply committed to ensuring that every child who walks through our doors, no matter how many times they move, feels welcomed, supported, and valued. This distinction reflects that commitment and our collective gratitude to those who serve our country.”

Signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2021, the Florida Purple Star Schools of Distinction program honors schools that go above and beyond to provide exceptional support, resources, and services to military-connected students and their families. Superintendent Marcus Chambers shared that the district began following the Purple Star initiative when it was first proposed during the 2021 legislative session. “Our own Representative Patt Maney was instrumental in bringing the Purple Star program to Florida, and we are thrilled to see our schools recognized for the incredible work they do to support our military children,” said Chambers.

To qualify, at least 75 percent of a district’s schools must meet the rigorous criteria required to earn the Purple Star distinction. This year, Florida Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas announced that 451 schools statewide received the Purple Star Schools of Distinction designation, including 78 new schools and 124 inaugural schools renewing their recognition. Additionally, 16 colleges within the Florida College System were recognized as Collegiate Purple Star Campuses.
