Okaloosa County School District Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, the Okaloosa County School District (OCSD) will engage students, staff, and families in activities designed to foster mental wellness, promote conversation, and provide mental health resources. This year’s theme is “Turn Awareness into Action,” with a special focus on resilience and thriving. The district will observe Mental Health Month through various initiatives, from fun activities to open dialogues about mental wellness. These efforts are designed to raise awareness and take action toward improving mental health for all members of the Okaloosa community.

“We are committed to the mental health of every student and staff member in our district,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “Our Mental Health Team plays a vital role in ensuring that our school communities have the support they need to thrive. Mental health is not just the absence of illness—it’s about resilience and well-being. As we move through Mental Health Month, I encourage everyone to reflect on their mental health, engage in open conversations, and take steps toward better mental wellness.”

Mental health is an essential aspect of overall well-being, and each year, one in five people experience a mental health condition. However, mental health is not just an individual concern—it’s a community issue. OCSD is dedicated to addressing mental health stigma by providing accessible resources, supporting educators, and encouraging open dialogue among students and families. As part of this year’s initiative, the district encourages individuals to take intentional steps toward prioritizing their mental health through simple, achievable actions. By assessing their mental health, choosing a course of action, and nurturing their emotional well-being, students and staff are empowered to prioritize mental wellness in May and year-round.

OCSD provides a comprehensive mental health resource page for students, parents, and staff, which includes helpful tools, community resources, and guidance on how to seek professional support when needed.
