Elliott Point Students Participate in Earth Day

Elliott Point students in grades PreK through 5th grade recently participated in the worldwide Earth Day Groceries Project by decorating paper bags with Earth Day slogans.

Three third grade classes took a walking field trip to Uptown Station to deliver over 500 newly decorated bags to Winn Dixie.

“The store bagged groceries for their customers with these Earth friendly messages from the kids in celebration of Earth Day,” said third grade teacher, Amelia Keeney Garrett.  “After delivering the bags, our classes did a park clean up at Ferry Park.  We picked up several large bags of trash including hundreds of cigarette butts of which the children were appalled by!  We discussed how harmful these can be for ducks and turtles.”

Garrett commented how impressed she was with the children's willingness to help out with cleaning up the park.

“Every child helped and I heard many comments before the end of the day about how much they enjoyed the trip and how proud they were to do something for their community. We will definitely do this field trip again next year,” said Garrett.
