The Okaloosa County School District is bringing math to life in an exciting new way through its Career and Technical Education (CTE) Building Math Program, now underway at Elliott Point Elementary, Wright Elementary, and Longwood Elementary Schools. Designed for fifth-grade students, this innovative initiative integrates real-world building trades into the math classroom, transforming traditional instruction into an engaging, hands-on learning experience. Rather than relying solely on textbooks, students are applying key math concepts such as measurement, fractions, and geometry while constructing tangible projects like toolboxes and simple structures.
Through these hands-on activities, students develop practical skills that deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. They learn to measure accurately using rulers and tape measures, calculate fractions while cutting materials, and explore angles and shapes through construction. In addition, students engage in problem-solving by determining material quantities and ensuring precise fits - turning abstract concepts into meaningful, real-world applications.
The program not only strengthens math proficiency but also boosts student engagement, confidence, and enthusiasm for learning. By connecting classroom instruction to real-life applications, students gain a clearer understanding of how math is used in everyday life and future careers, particularly in construction and STEM-related fields. Leading the initiative is Mr. Greg Rynearson, the District’s Teacher on Special Assignment for CTE. With extensive experience in the construction industry and as a former building trades teacher at Pryor Middle School, Mr. Rynearson brings a unique blend of expertise and passion to the classroom, inspiring students to explore math in new and exciting ways.
