Sanford Hayes Named Senior Outstanding Volunteer of the Year

Sanford Hayes, a long-time volunteer at Walker Elementary School, has been named OCSD's Senior Outstanding Volunteer of the Year and was recognized at the June 9, 2025, School Board meeting.

Mr. Hayes has been a devoted volunteer mentor at Walker for 13 years, giving over 1,300 hours of his time to support more than 60 students. He meets weekly with students to build their academic and social skills through personalized mentoring that includes games, real-life conversations, and goal-setting. When a student is identified as needing support, Mr. Hayes steps in with a thoughtful, tailored approach to help them grow emotionally, improve behavior, and make better choices. Even after undergoing two double knee replacements, he remained committed, showing incredible resilience.

As a local pastor and school leader, Mr. Hayes also supports school events, serves on the School Advisory Council, and inspires others to get involved. His impact has led to stronger student performance, better peer relationships, and a more connected school community.

Congratulations!
