Okaloosa County Teachers Gear Up For School To Start

Okaloosa County School District teachers started back to school this Monday and have been busy preparing for the students to arrive next week.

The Crestview area Elementary Schools celebrated on Monday with a joint breakfast at Antioch Elementary School. The theme for this year’s breakfast was “Common Core…It’s not about what I do…It’s about what WE do!”

Teachers from Antioch, Bob Sikes, Northwood, Riverside, and Walker Elementary wore brightly colored shirts with the Common Core message and enjoyed the annual breakfast. Riverside Elementary School treated the teacher's to a Common Core skit based on The Bachelor series.

When asked what was new in the classroom this year, Dottie Holland, a Project Child Math teacher from Bob Sikes said, “Integrating the new Common Core standards into our daily lives and marrying them with the Sunshine State Standards so that we are ready at the end of the year. It is going to be a challenge for us, as well as to the kids. It is going to make us challenge them more.”

To help the students prepare for the start of a new school year, Cheri Dickson, a Project Child Reading teacher from Bob Sikes said, “They just need to have the right mind set. It’s a fresh new year. Start with a clear mind and clear head.”

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” said Ulaunda Nunn a Project Child Writing teacher from Bob Sikes. “That is what we are here for.”

Holland also had this advice for students, “Come in with a positive attitude - with a can do attitude of ‘I’m ready to go. It’s a new year and I’m going to do my best.’”
