Connelly Grelle, a 5th grade student at Destin Middle School (DMS), was recognized at the May 12th School Board meeting for winning the West Florida Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) American History Essay Contest. Connelly’s essay won first place in the local DAR chapter, the State of Florida, and the Southeast Division of the United States. Her award-winning essay also placed third on the National level.
Connelly’s essay, “Enjoying a New Kind of Tea Party: The Importance of Women in American History,” explored the first political protest led by women in the British Colonies. This protest was in response to the Tea Act, passed by the British Parliament. In 1774, 51 women from Edenton, North Carolina signed a statement to boycott the purchase of tea and other British goods from England.
Leah McGill, the Chairperson of the American History Essay Contest stated, “This year’s essay contest was highly competitive, and Connelly’s essay stood out for its insightful analysis, historical accuracy, and strong writing.”
Connelly’s winning essay was also recognized by Regent Teri Vice at the February meeting of the West Florida DAR chapter, where she received a certificate, medal, and a gift card to Barnes and Noble. Connelly was also recognized at the DAR State Conference in Orlando, Florida, where she received a medal and a monetary award by the Florida State Society State Regent, Cindy Addison. Following her state win, her essay went on to win first place in the Southeast Division and third place in the National American History Essay Contest. At the national conference in June, she will receive further accolades and a larger monetary award.
