CTE programs give students the opportunity to do more than learn about a career—they give them the chance to explore it. For Micah Johnson, the Biomedical Sciences program has opened the door to a world of healthcare careers while helping him discover his own interests and strengths.
Encouraged by his mom to enroll in Biomedical Sciences as a freshman, Micah quickly found that the program offered much more than a classroom introduction to medicine. From hands-on labs and medical terminology to leadership experiences and exposure to real-world procedures, his experiences have helped him develop skills and a clearer sense of direction for his future.
Although Micah is still exploring which healthcare career is right for him, he is already looking ahead to college, athletics, and a future in the medical field. His story is a great example of how CTE can help students explore careers, discover their passions, and build a foundation for success.
We asked Micah to share his experience in the Biomedical Sciences program and what he has learned along the way.
Why did you choose this CTE program?
My mom encouraged me to join Biomedical Sciences as a freshman. I had always been interested in the medical field, and because my mom works as an EEG technician, I had already seen some of the opportunities healthcare can offer. Right now, I’m interested in areas like anesthesiology and medical imaging, but I’m still exploring.
What opportunities has this program given you?
Biomed has given me a strong foundation in medical terminology and healthcare concepts. I can even talk with my athletic trainer using medical terminology, and sometimes my teammates have no idea what we’re talking about! It has also helped me see how many different career paths are available in healthcare.
What has been your favorite experience?
Definitely the hands-on labs. Sophomore year was when Biomed really clicked for me, and Ms. Paizes played a big part in that. I also attended a medical leadership program in Massachusetts, where we heard from inspiring speakers and watched a shoulder reconstruction surgery. It was pretty gross, but really cool!
How has this program prepared you for your future?
Biomed has helped me figure out what I enjoy and what I don’t, which is important when you’re deciding on a career. It has also shown me that I may be able to combine my interest in medicine with my love of sports.
What are your plans after high school?
I plan to attend college and hopefully continue playing sports while exploring a career in healthcare. I’m currently considering Huntingdon College and LaGrange College. I don’t know exactly which medical career I’ll choose yet, but Biomed has helped give me a direction.

We also had the opportunity to speak with his mom, Monica Johnson, an EEG Technician at Eglin Air Force Base, to hear her perspective on his Biomedical Sciences journey.
Why did you encourage him to choose Biomedical Sciences?
He has always been a very compassionate and empathetic kid, and I felt like he could really excel in the medical field. I entered healthcare later in life and wish I had discovered it sooner. When I learned about the Biomedical Sciences program, I saw it as an opportunity for him to explore different careers early and start finding his niche.
What do you hope he takes away from the program?
My goal has always been for him to graduate with as many opportunities as possible. He doesn’t have to know exactly what he wants to do at 17. I just want him to have a strong foundation, explore his options, and be prepared when he discovers what he really loves. That’s what CTE is all about—giving students the opportunity to explore, discover their passions, and build skills for their future.
