The Dietary Guidelines for Americans gives solid, research-based advice on food and physical activity choices for health.

The Dietary Guidelines describe a healthy diet as one that:

Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.
Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts.
Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.

Daily Recommendations (based on a 2,000 calorie diet):

Fruits and Vegetables: 2 cups of fruit and 2½ cups of vegetables
Grains: 5 ounces of whole grain foods
Milk: 3 cups of fat-free or low-fat milk
Meats / Beans: 5 ounces of lean meats

Don't forget:

Say NO to trans fats;
Keep salt (sodium) to less than 2,300 mg a day (1 teaspoon)
Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
