Plew Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Students at James E. Plew Elementary celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th with different activities led by Plew’s Spanish teacher, Mildred Avellanet.

The celebration ended with a wonderful and colorful Hispanic program featuring students from all grade levels. There were poems, songs, and folklore dances from Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Peru, and Panama.

After the program, students and visitors learned more about the Hispanic countries by viewing displays of native objects that Hispanic parents brought from their native Hispanic countries, and tasted home made fresh tortillas, tamales, ”florecitas” cookies, and spicy “tamarindo” and other flavored Hispanic candies.

Plew had representation from Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Peru, Cuba, and Spain.
