Meet Mrs. Goodhart

Mrs. Goodhart has been a teacher at Shalimar Elementary for thirty-four years. She has taught ten years in third grade and has taught fifth grade for the last fourteen years. She loves teaching reading and social studies because, "Reading and social studies go together – you can’t teach one without the other."

Mrs. Goodhart was born at Eglin Air Force Base, FL, and has lived in the Fort Walton Beach area all of her life. She loves to spend time with her family and friends, go antique shopping, and, of course, she loves to read.

Mrs. Brechin continued her education by completing coursework to obtain elementary certification and then began teaching at Shalimar Elementary in 1988. Her 1st year at Shalimar she taught 4th grade and then moved to first where she has been since.

Mrs. Brechin enjoys reading professional books, children’s literature, and spending time with their 2 dogs – Gabby, a rescued greyhound and Zoe, a bullmastiff. She and Jim have 2 grown daughters.

Meet Ms. Piburn

I attended the University of Iowa before teaching 2nd and 3rd grades in Okaloosa County and Nevada. I chose to stay home for the next 18 years with my three children, teaching or volunteering for many of their activities as they grew. I returned to work full-time in 2002 and have been enjoying first grade at Shalimar ever since. My goal is for students to believe they are capable of attaining whatever they are willing to work for. I want to develop engaged readers, thoughtful writers, deep thinkers, and curious explorers. When not at school, my passions are dance, gardening, music, and reading.

Meet Ms. Gill

Growing up, Lara lived in Texas, Mississippi, and Central America with her military family. Lara graduated from Choctawhatchee High School and earned her Elementary Education degree from the University of West Florida. She's taught in Okaloosa County since 2001, mostly in third, fourth, and fifth grade. As a Florida Digital Educator, Lara is dedicated to integrating technology into her lessons and helps maintain the Shalimar school website. She is also certified in ESOL and as a Media Specialist.

Reading has always been a passion and she hopes to share that sense of wonder and love of reading with her students. As a child, she was the one hiding under the blanket with a flashlight and an ew book way past bedtime!  Lara also enjoys listening to music, cooking, travelling, and spending time with her Cavalier King Charles spaniels.

To her students and familes:

"I'm looking forward to this school year!  Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to teach your child."
