As a reminder, anytime children are in school it is “Head Lice Season” and because of this we have had several confirmed cases of head lice in our school.  Please take a few minutes to check your child’s hair and scalp for live lice and nits.  On the back of this letter is a Head Lice “Fact Sheet” for your review.  Also below is Okaloosa County School District’s Head Lice Policy.

4-42 HEAD LICE

(A) Students in Okaloosa County School District schools may be checked for head lice by the school clinic staff.  School officials will take the following steps when a student is identified with head lice:

(1) Parents or Guardians will be called to transport the student home.  Students are not permitted to ride the bus when head lice are identified.

(2) School clinic staff will give parents written procedures on the treatment of head lice.

(3) After treatment, parents will bring the student back to the clinic with documentation that the head lice was treated and the clinic staff will check that the student is free of lice and/or live nits.

(4) Students will be allowed to return to class once the school has been provided with documentation that head lice are being treated and the student has been checked by clinic staff.

(5) The school principal or his/her designee shall be notified upon the third incident of lice or live nits in a single semester.

Thank you for your help in keeping all of our children well and ready to learn.

Safety & Supervision

By law, our staff provides supervision for your students for up to 30 minutes before the first bell and up to 30 minutes after the dismissal bell, in addition to all instructional hours. Students who arrive prior to 8:05 a.m. and are still here after 3:45 p.m. will be sent to Daycare and charged a $10/day drop-in fee.

The first bell rings at 8:30 a.m. The tardy bell rings at 8:45 a.m. Safety patrol is dismissed from the crosswalk at Red-stone Avenue no later than 8:40 a.m. so the crossing may be un-manned after this time.
With safety in mind, please be on time!

Any transportation changes MUST be made IN WRITING (or in person). In the event of a mid-day change or an emer-gency, an e-mail or even a picture of a signed note (via email) will do! Just send it to your child’s teacher and/or brunsonb@okaloosaschools.com

Drop-off begins @ 8:15 a.m.
Dismissal begins @ 3:15 p.m.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Our goal is to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all of our students and staff at Riverside. We rely heavily on each of you as parents to help us reach that goal. As we venture into cold and flu season, here are a few key reminders for everyone that will enable us to keep your child and our staff members as healthy as possible.

Per school board policy:

  • If your child has a fever (100.0 degrees or higher) they must remain at home until they are fever free.
  • If your child is vomiting or has diarrhea they should remain home for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Rashes: Because of the probability of rashes being contagious any student with a rash of unknown origin (undiagnosed) should remain at home until the rash has resolved or written permission is obtained from a physician permitting attendance. A copy of that doctor's note should be forwarded to the classroom teacher and school nurse. Any student with an undiagnosed rash at school should be picked up by a parent and advised to get a medical assessment.

In regard to open wounds/sores: Accidents happen! Boo boo's are to be expected with young children. We ask that students with open wounds or sores have all open draining lesions covered with a bandage prior to arrival at school. Once those wounds have scabbed over and are no longer bleeding/draining a bandage is not necessary. This will protect your child from developing a secondary infection in their wound and will prevent other students and staff from being exposed to potentially infectious bodily fluids.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation in this matter and we look forward to sharing a happy and healthy school year with your family. If you have any questions, concerns, or are interested in reviewing school board policy regarding frequently encountered illness and injuries in the school setting please contact the school nurse or administration. We also greatly encourage you to visit the Okaloosa County School District website and review the Documents/Policies section.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) requires that school districts provide parents with an annual school status report, known as the School Public Accountability Reports (SPARs). To assist Florida school districts in preparing SPARs for their stakeholders, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) has posted these reports containing data for the required indicators as well as the Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO) on the Web at
