District Holds Take Stock in Children Mentor Appreciation Luncheon

In celebration of Mentor Appreciation Month, the District held a Take Stock in Children (TSIC) Mentor appreciation luncheon at the Okaloosa Technical College Conference Center on Tuesday, January 29, 2020. Lunch was catered by the Okaloosa Technical College’s Culinary students. TSIC mentors were celebrated for their years in service.

This year is the 25th anniversary of Take Stock in Children on a state level, and the program has been in Okaloosa County for 19 years. Since the program’s inception, TSIC has served 327 students. Of those students, 122 have graduated college and 140 are currently enrolled. Each of those 327 students have had a volunteer mentor.

“In Okaloosa county, we currently have 53 students served by 51 active mentors,” said Nicole Snider, TSIC Student Services Coordinator. “Those 51 mentors combined have recorded over 500 mentoring sessions together since the start of this school year.”

The Okaloosa School District continually recruits mentors at all academic levels throughout the county. The District screens, orients, trains and matches volunteer mentors with students and maintains support of mentoring relationships between students and mentors.

Mentoring takes place during the school year on the school campus for 30 minutes to one hour each week at a time during the school day that is convenient for both mentor and student.

Studies have shown that students who are mentored develop more positive attitudes, achieve higher grades, improve relationships with adults and peers, are better able to express feelings, are more likely to trust their teachers, and develop higher levels of self-confidence.
