Students Stand for Safety - March 14th - Update

This is a school safety announcement sent on behalf of Superintendent of Okaloosa County Schools Mary Beth Jackson. The Superintendent has approved that secondary students, with the written permission of their parents or legal guardian, may participate in the Students Stand for Safety event. The event has been announced to occur on March 14, at 10 a.m. local time and will last for 17 minutes. Students who attend the event will remain in their designated area for the 17 minutes of the activity. Arrangements will be made at each school to ensure this is a safe event for the students and school personnel who are present. This event is an opportunity to reflect and for all who participate to show unity supporting school safety. The position of leaders across our county is that student safety should always be a top priority. Additionally, on March 14, the Superintendent, representatives from the Sheriff's Office and others will be attending a Student Leadership Safety Summit in order to obtain student perspectives on a range of safety issues and to share with them some of the most recent changes to be implemented in schools. Student government leaders from the six high schools in our district will be in attendance to shape the discussion at the Summit.  High School students are encouraged to share their ideas regarding school safety with their representatives who will be attending this meeting. Again parent permission is required for students to be released from class and permission forms should be returned by Tuesday, March 13th.

Parent permission forms, for students in grades 6-12, were distributed Wednesday, March 7.  These forms will give a student permission to leave class and participate in a seventeen minute “Students Stand for Safety” event.  School safety is an issue that most would agree should be the single most important focus of a school district.  Students and employees will have the opportunity to demonstrate their unity around this issue on Wednesday, March 14.  Below is a sample parent permission form that will be given to students. Students should return their permission forms to their teacher by March 13. Please read it carefully as you consider granting your student permission to participate.

Thank you,

Mary Beth Jackson
