NHS Junior Selected for Chinese Immersion Program

Picture of Jackson Cook

Jackson Cook, a junior at Niceville High School, will travel to Xi’an, China for six weeks this June as part of the National Security Language Initiative Youth program.

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program was launched in 2006 to promote critical language learning among American youth. The NSLI-Y is part of a U.S. government initiative that prepares American citizens to be leaders in a global world. The U.S. Department of State, in cooperation with American Councils for International Education, awards and administers merit-based scholarships to high school students for participation in summer and academic year immersion programs in locations where the eight NSLI-Y languages are spoken. NSLI-Y immerses participants in the cultural life of the host country, giving them formal and informal language practice and sparking a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures.

Jackson is a member of the Eagle Pride band drum line, and is currently enrolled in Chinese 3 Honors, as well as four other Advanced Placement courses at Niceville High School.  He will also be performing in the NHS theater production of Mama Mia, which opens April 4 at the NHS auditorium.

Two NHS Students Recognized by College Board

Picture of Halle Bright and Joseph Moore

Halle Bright and Joseph Moore, both juniors at Niceville High School, were recently invited by the College Board to participate in the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP).  They both scored in the top 2.5% on the October 2018 PSAT among all Hispanic and Latino test-takers in our region.

Every year, the NHRP recognizes about 5,000 of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT.   The College Board’s NHRP program is an academic honor that can be included on college applications.  Colleges may use this program to identify academically exceptional Hispanic/Latino students.  Halle and Joseph are both enrolled in Advanced Placement courses at NHS.
