Principal - Melissa Bowell

Melissa Bowell has deep roots in Okaloosa County Schools as her mother retired from teaching after 35 years; her sister, Heather, is a Mental Health Counselor in the District, and her husband, David, is the School Resource Officer at Bruner Middle School. She began her educational career nearly 20 years ago at her alma mater, Fort Walton Beach High School, teaching English Language Arts and, eventually, Advanced Placement Literature. In 2015, Bowell became a Secondary Curriculum Specialist for the District, where she helped deliver professional development to secondary English Language Arts and Social Studies teachers across the District. Most recently, she has been the Assistant Principal at Choctawhatchee High School, where she has truly loved becoming a Big Green Indian.

Bowell graduated from Florida State University with her bachelor’s degree in English Literature, and the University of West Florida with her master’s degree in Curriculum and her Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership.

Bowell is excited to become a Meigs Wildcat, where both of her daughters walked the ramps (and her dad, too, back when it was Choctawhatchee High School). She truly believes in the transformative power of education and is dedicated to the students, parents, faculty, and staff at Meigs.

Joey Chancellor

Assistant Principal - Joey Chancellor

My name Ernest J. Chancellor, most know me by Joey. I moved to Fort Walton Beach a little over a year along with my wife Catherine who is an ESE Instructional Coach for Okaloosa County School District. We have three adult children; daughter Shalesa who resides in Texas, daughter Adara who lives in Wisconsin, and son Carston who is attending the University of Wisconsin - Madison...Go Badgers!

I’ve been an educator since 1991. I’ve held every educational position from daycare teacher, to aide and paraprofessional, and then began his teaching career as an elementary and then middle school teacher for 12 years. Most recently, before the move, I was an Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at Franklin Middle School in Green Bay, Wisconsin for four years and then Associate Principal/Summer School Director at New London Middle School in New London, Wisconsin. Not only have I educated students within the classroom, but also coached both girls’ and boys’ basketball and track for many years. Since moving to Florida, I continue to officiate many levels of basketball and football.

I believe ALL children are a gift and possess diverse talents and capabilities. I consider it a privilege to help facilitate their learning and academic growth, while fostering a staff culture that always wants to see students doing their best! I strive to provide a safe and nurturing environment where each student can have the opportunity to experience success and progress. It is my goal to help encourage students to look beyond the four walls of their classroom and view the world around them as a place of learning and discovery. I’m very excited about my new journey as Assistant Principal at Meigs Middle School and looking forward to meeting new students and staff. I have a “Kid’s First” educational philosophy and my door is ALWAYS open!!
