~MILITARY AND FAMILY LIFE COUNSELOR~

 

The Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) stationed on the Lewis School campus is available to offer additional support to assist with the unique challenges that military families experience. The counseling services, offered at no cost to the families or school district, are available to any student with an active duty military parent, or any military family requesting assistance. Services are private and confidential, with the exception of child abuse/neglect, domestic abuse, and other duty-to-warn situations. Typical issues the Counselor addresses include; school adjustment, stress management and coping skills, anger management and conflict resolution skills, deployment and reintegration issues, parenting, behavioral concerns, fear, grief, and loss. Military and Family Life Counselors in a snapshot!

 

Military and Family Life Counselors ARE:

  • Licensed Clinical counselors who hold a Masters degree or PhD
  • Have experience working with children
  • Are knowledgeable about the unique challenges of the military lifestyle
  • A free services provided by the Department of Defense

 

Military and Family Life Counselors DO

  • Short-term, non-medical counseling
  • Classroom guidance and presentations
  • Supportive skills building through group discussions
  • Supplement other services in school and community
  • Parental meetings as requested for additional support
  • Report mandated issues in accordance with State, school, and military policies of child safety

 

Military and Family Life Counselors DON’T:

  • Keep written records
  • Provide diagnoses or assessments
  • Meet with a child outside of the line of sight of teachers, other faculty or parents
