Southside Celebrates Grandparents with Popsicles on the Playground

Southside Primary School in Crestview, Florida celebrated Grandparents Day on Friday, September 9 with “Popsicles on the Playground.”

“We had over 215 Grandparents come and enjoy the beautiful weather with their grandchild on our beautiful playground,” said Principal Debra Haan.

Grandparents Day originated in late 1970, when Marian McQuade, a West Virginia housewife, came up with the idea of a day set aside to encourage families to visit their elderly relatives. After lobbying policymakers tirelessly, a resolution to make Grandparents Day a national holiday was signed into law in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter.  The resolution declares National Grandparents Day as the first Sunday after Labor Day each year.
