Schools Across the District Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!

Schools across Okaloosa County recently participated in Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida, a Florida state initiative aimed at encouraging students to connect literacy with all kinds of careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida is an annual event during which students, teachers, administrators, parents and volunteers all celebrate the tremendous success Florida's students have accomplished over the past decade.  During the week students are also encouraged to keep reading and improving their skills.

Plew Elementary School

Plew Elementary School held an “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” read aloud day with guest readers in every classroom.  Guest readers were treated to breakfast in the multipurpose room which was decorated in a bright and colorful Dr. Seuss theme.  The welcome sign on the door said it all: “What amazing things Read Aloud Day brings, people like you to read here at Plew!”

Guest readers included Superintendent of Schools, Mary Beth Jackson, School Board Member, Melissa Thrush, Assistant Superintendent Steve Horton, and Deputy Thomas.

Elliott Point Elementary School

Elliott Point Elementary students, teachers, administrators, and educational support employees arrived at school dressed to Celebrate Literacy Week with the Read-A-Rama Pajama Day in full swing!  The evening of January 27th, teachers dressed in costumes read and acted out their favorite books.  Parents and children first had dinner in the cafeteria and an opportunity to shop at The Scholastic Book Fair.

Longwood Elementary School

Longwood Elementary School held a character day where guest readers dressed up as their favorite characters from the books they shared with the students.  Students also had the opportunity to participate in crafts featured in the books, like making mittens to go along with The Mitten Tree.
