Massey moved to Fort Walton Beach in 1986 with her parents Jim and Mary-Lou Pearson and sister, Holly (Pearson) McDaniel.  Her father retired from the Special Operations Unit at Hurlburt AFB.  She graduated from Fort Walton Beach High School in 1990.  Dawn received her Bachelor’s Degree in both early childhood and elementary education from the University of West Florida in 1995.   She completed her Master’s Degree in educational leadership from the University of West Florida in 2010.

A classroom teacher for seventeen years at Plew Elementary, Dawn taught kindergarten, second grade and provided tutoring support for third through fifth grade at risk students.  Dawn was an instructional leader inside and outside the classroom during those seventeen years.  She provided professional development to the staff, trained, and mentored many incoming teachers and was instrumental in implementing a differentiated instructional block that led to closing the achievement gap throughout the school.  She served on the School Advisory Council and was actively involved with the leadership team at Plew.  In 2012 she accepted an instructional coach position and served at both Edwins and Eglin Elementary schools.  Throughout her career, Dawn has trained teachers on using data to drive instruction, the data team process, and has assisted teachers in using highly-effective intervention strategies to increase student proficiency.

Massey has been the assistant principal at Destin Elementary this past school year, and she worked closely with the leadership team to increase proficiency rates in both reading and math.  She has extensive experience with the Multi-Tiered System of Supports, School Wide Positive Behavior Systems, leading effective PLCs and data teams.   She has served on the PPP, MTSS, Mission/Vision, and curriculum guide committees at the district level.  She is excited to join the “Roadrunner Team” and looks forward to making a positive impact on the school and community.
