Okaloosa STEMM Academy Students Excel at Odyssey of the Mind Tournament

Four teams from the Okaloosa STEMM Academy competed in the Emerald Coast Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament on Saturday, Feb 28 at Shoal River Middle School.  Each team competed in a different category and has been working for five months on a solution to a particular long-term problem as well as honing their quick response spontaneous problem solving skills.

The tournament hosted approximately 80 teams this year from schools across the panhandle and the Stingers won several awards:

Team 2 (Teertho Bhattacharya, Tyler Duley, Alyssa Fredmonsky, Trinity Hixson-Wells, Spencer Odom, Aaron Sutherland, Arianna Wittic) - Technical Performance Category: Third place, and advancement to State competition

Team 3 (Raven Bowman, Jessica Curtis, Megan Fordham, Gavin Merlo, Audrey Peasley) - Classics Category

Team 5 (Isabella Perez, Nicole Terry, Katherine Veth, Rachel Von Eberstein, Will Wolfe) - Performance: Fifth place

“Congratulations to all the students for a job well done,” said Wanda Avery, Okaloosa STEMM Academy Principal.  “They performed fabulously, especially considering that this is only the second year of the team and most of the coaches are brand new.  Also, great thanks need to be given to their tireless team coaches:  Mike Lindsay and Ron Mahn (Team 1), Kristin Fredmonsky and Timothy Flynn (Team 2), Terry Bowman and Jennifer Merlo (Team 3), and Gary Terry (Team 5).”

The state competition will be held at the University of Central Florida on April 11, 2015.
