OCSD Jumps to 4th in State on FSA Algebra 1 EOC

The Okaloosa County School District (OCSD) announced the latest Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) test results released, and are proud to share a great increase in the FSA Algebra 1 End of Course (EOC) exam.  The OCSD had a nearly 10% lift in its FSA Algebra 1 EOC average scores, and jumped from 16th to 4th in the state, out of 67 districts.

“I attribute the success of our scores due to all the hard work of our teachers and students.  We really put an emphasis on getting students engaged and motivated,” according to District Math coach Stephanie Thetford.  “We used a combination of teacher training to really prepare teachers and our students for this new exam.  We worked hard with our students to motivate them as well.  As an ‘End of Course’ exam indicates, it measures the entire year of Algebra 1, not just a portion, and we are thrilled by the great results of our exceptional students.”

Added Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson, “We work closely with our outstanding teachers on how they approached teaching Algebra so our students would have the knowledge and confidence to excel.  It is exciting to see this improvement.  The State average remained almost unchanged, but we had an almost 10% gain in scores. The constant improvement in the last few years in our District is a real testament to what a team can accomplish when they work together on a common goal,” said Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson. “I am honored to represent the extraordinary students and teachers that make us an academically top performing District in Florida.”

Debbie Davis, the district math specialist stated, “Teachers have pulled together throughout the year during district led professional development activities as well as during school-based departmental learning communities to focus on the standards.  From building common assessments and studying their item specifications to leading students in robust classroom discussions our teachers have worked intelligently to make sure their students reached mastery.”

About the FSA:  Students entering 10th grade and/or taking Algebra 1 in 2014-2015 will be required to achieve a certain score on the respective 10th grade ELA test and the Algebra 1 assessment in order to meet graduation requirements.  These students will continue to have the opportunity for retakes that all students have had before.
