Hannah Sevy, Crestview HS, Places 1st in the Keiser University Edible Centerpiece Competition

Crestview High School culinary students competed in the 14th Annual ProStart Culinary Team Competition that was held March 5- 6, 2014, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Hannah Sevy, a senior at Crestview High School, won 1st place in the Edible Centerpiece portion of the competition.  Sevy had one hour to complete her piece, and then had an oral presentation/questioning session which consisted of nutritional information, availability of product and prep technique.  In addition, she was judged on her personal appearance, work organization, safety and sanitation, proper use of tools, and work area cleanliness.

Students participating in this category were judged on originality, use of seasonal fruits and vegetables, degree of difficulty, and appearance.

Sevy received a $10,000 scholarship to Keiser University along with other smaller monetary awards to other culinary schools.

According to www.frla.org, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association's Educational Foundation Web site, more than $800,000 was distributed to the winning schools.  A total of 60 participating teams were comprised of high school juniors and seniors who were enrolled in the
ProStart curriculum program during the 2013-2014 school year.  Teams participated in four competitions which included the Cracker Barrel Management Competition, the Johnson & Wales University Gourmet Meal Competition, the Keiser University Edible Centerpiece Competition, and the Coca-Cola Company Waiters Relay Competition.
