FWBHS Drumline Places First at the Gulf Coast Color Guard and Percussion Circuit Championship

Fort Walton Beach High School’s Drumline recently placed first in the Gulf Coast Color Guard and Percussion Circuit Championship held in Enterprise, Alabama.  Baker School placed fourth.

“They just exceed my expectations all the time,” said Derek Fields, Fort Walton Beach High School Assistant Band Director, who oversees the drumline.

To motivate the students, Fields promised to shave his beard of 14 years if they earned more than 90 points.

Their final score? 90.6!  Five points higher than their last competition score.

Fields, who says he plans to shave this week, said the win had more to do with the students than his deal to shave.

“Part of it is just the work ethic and the process it takes to make anything good,” he said.

Expectations are high for next season as the drumline looks forward to attending the world competition in Ohio.
