Destin MS Hosts The Beauty and The Beast Powerlifting Championships

The Beauty and The Beast Power lifting championships held Wednesday, February 18, at Destin Middle School included both male and female student/athletes from the north and south ends of the Okaloosa County School District.

Coach Daniel Griffin, the Destin Middle School Athletic Director organized the meet in order to expose interested middle school students to power lifting.  The weight lifting classes which meet all year at most middle schools, introduce the student/athletes to a high school and Olympic level sport.

Coach Griffin, Coach Rex Bowman (Pryor Middle School) and Coach Dean Vinson (Bruner Middle School) collaborated in their efforts to organize a competitive meet which proved to be a great arena to not only pique student interest in lifting, but to also compare how the students perform under competitive pressure.  Students competed in ten weight classes and under the same rules as high school lifters.

Planning for the powerlifting event has been underway since the beginning of October.  Coach Griffin would like to eventually involve all middle schools in the county in what promises to be an incredible sport opportunity for student/athletes.

The motto for this year’s inaugural event was borrowed from the DMS Marlins and proclaims:  “If it doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you.
