Choctawhatchee HS Students Help Create Mats for the Homeless

The Career Skills class students at Choctawhatchee High School recently teamed up with a local group of women called the Emerald Coast Bag Ladies to make mats for the homeless.  The ladies use plastic grocery bags to crochet into mats hence the name “Bag Ladies.”

“One of the members, Jan Zlata, a Choctawhatchee graduate, came to our class the other day to show my students how to create plarn (plastic yarn) from the bags,” said English IV/Career Skills teacher, Linda Evanchyk.  “My students are collecting bags and making the plarn that they will give to Ms. Zlata every week to contribute to the cause.  According to Zlata it takes over 700 bags to make a 4’x6’ mat.”

Bags may be donated in the Choctawhatchee High School attendance office daily from 7:00 am until 2:30 pm.
