Seat Management FAQ

Q1. Okay, so the district is leasing student computers to maintain a 5:1 ratio, teacher computers, and school administrative computers. However, this isn’t enough to meet our school’s educational objectives. How does a school get more computers?

Answer:  A school may purchase additional seats from local operating funds. This can be either a “Seat Managed Seat” or “Support Managed Seat”.

Q2. How can I be sure that I receive prompt service?

Answer:  Telaforce (formerly a part of L3 and CACI), is obligated, by contract, to provide timely support to your computers based on priorities assigned by the district. In general, teacher computers and critical administrative computers will have highest priority. You will be able to get help for your computer questions by contacting the OCSD Help Desk by e-mail or telephone.  They will provide assistance at your convenience to identify and resolve hardware and software problems. This assistance begins with the initial service request and continues until your request is completed.

Q3. I have this computer software package that I have been using for a long time that I really like. Can I still use it?

Answer:  Assuming you have a legal copyright license, yes, you may continue to use this software. If you want to run this software on a “Seat Managed” or “Support Managed” seat, Telaforce will test the software to ensure that it will work properly without adversely affecting the computer or the network.

Q4. Help -- My computer is broken! Who do I call?

Answer:  Call the OCSD Help Desk at (850) 897-2966 for all your technology support needs.

Q5.  Why is this a good thing for me?

Answer:  You are able to get help for your computer questions by contacting the Help Desk through e-mail or the telephone. They will provide assistance at your convenience to identify and resolve hardware and software problems. This assistance begins with the initial service request and continues until your request is completed.

Q6. What kinds of seats are available?

Answer:  There are basic and advanced desktop computers for students and administrators, and basic and advanced laptops for teachers and administrators. These are all “Seat Managed Seats” which means they are owned by Telaforce and leased to the OCSD. Also available are “Support Managed Seats”. These are seats that belong to the OCSD; however, they are connected to the network and supported by Telaforce.

Q7. How is this different from the way we used to do business?

Answer:  The biggest change does not directly affect end-user support. Specifically, most computer equipment now belongs to Telaforce, and we lease the seats from them. This is a cost effective method for OCSD because it allows us to use our capital funds more efficiently and provide more flexibility to free up general revenue operating funds for school support.

Q8. What is Seat Management?

Answer:  Seat Management refers to a new initiative in the OCSD. We lease computers and the associated support, known as seats, from Telaforce.

Q9. Why is this a good thing for my school?

Answer:  The majority of the technology funds will be expended at the district level. Specifically, capital funds are used to lease and maintain: student computers to maintain the 5 students to 1 computer ratio; school administrative and teacher computers.
