Kathy Gates Ard, Ed.S., Principal

Kathy Gates Ard’s career in education started right here, at Elliott Point.  She attended “The Point” for K-6, Pryor Junior High School and Choctawhatchee High School.  She received her AA degree from Okaloosa Walton Community College then finished off her degree at the University of West Florida. Mrs. Ard has received a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education, Master’s Degree in Clinical Teaching, Specific Learning Disabilities, and an Educational Specialist Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.  She also has reading endorsement and educational leadership on her educator’s certificate, along with a specialized reading certificate from Georgia State University.

The past twenty years of teaching in Okaloosa County has afforded Mrs. Ard many different teaching situations.  She began teaching a 4th/5th combination class at Plew Elementary.  The following year she was hired as an SLD teacher and taught at Plew, then Oak Hill Elementary.  Then she was selected to attend Georgia State University to become a Reading Recovery Teacher Leader.  After a year of living in Atlanta, she returned to the county to lead Reading Recovery.  When this program ended she held many different positions in the county which all supported teachers and reading instruction.  Feeling the need to get grounded again, Mrs. Ard went to Liza Jackson and taught 4th grade for 5 years.  Returning to literacy coaching was an easy decision when she was offered the position to come back home to Elliott Point as the ELA Instructional Coach.  Now Mrs. Ard is thrilled to be the assistant principal at Elliott Point Elementary School.

Mrs. Ard loves to read and strives to share that passion.   She believes that learning should be fun, even though it is hard work.  Mrs. Ard enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband Rob, and their two children, Trevor and Kendall.  Her household also contains three “fur babies”, all rescued from local shelters.

Scott Nuss, Assistant Principal

I am thrilled and honored to be a part of the Elliott Point family. I have been an educator for the last 17 years in Okaloosa County.

My career started as a teacher at Wright Elementary where I spent 14 great years working with intermediate grades 3-5.  I have always enjoyed being in the classroom and being able to have a positive influence on children both academically and outside the classroom. Towards the end of the 2012 school year I moved over to Bruner Middle School and became the Dean of Students.

For the next 3 years I was able to transition to an Assistant Principal and I was very fortunate to become a proud member of the Spartan family. I have always believed that we have been given an opportunity as educators to "Pay it Forward" and make students as well rounded and successful in life as possible.

I am very grateful to Mrs. Ard to have the opportunity to work with such a wonderful staff at Elliott Point!!
