EXPANDED FOOD SERVICE DURING SCHOOL CLOSURES 
 
Meal service for all school-age children is expanding beginning Wednesday, March 25 with the establishment of four additional school feeding sites and a total five bus routes into neighborhoods to provide meals to students using Grab and Go.  The complete list of school feeding sites is below with new sites

OTHER INFORMATION  State food service guidelines require the student to be present in order for meals to be distributed.   
 
 When a parent arrives at a meal site, they will be able to receive up to two meals for the day for each student they bring to the site (breakfast and lunch).  
 
 Students may pick up meals for themselves without a parent present.

Parents,

The week of March 23rd will be a busy week for our schools in Okaloosa County. As parents, you will receive several important notifications through email, social media, and call outs.  The goal for this week is to provide our students and parents with the necessary information as we all transition into this new normal of online instruction. I will also be sending out a document and a video later this week that will provide some guidance for parents on online education. 

Additionally, we will be providing approximately 17,000 devices to students and families beginning this Tuesday, March 24th.  While we do not currently have enough devices to hand one out for each of the 32,000 students in our district, we have enough to ensure that all students who are in need will receive one. It is important to note that elementary students will be issued an IPad and secondary students will be issued a laptop. What does this mean for you and your child(ren)? If you currently have an IPad or a laptop, we ask that you use your device to allow our students without an IPad or laptop the ability to receive one. At this time, we are only disbursing one device per family; however, we have purchased more devices and have a plan in place to deploy second devices once we have ensured each family that needs a laptop or an IPad has received one.

You have likely seen information posted on social media from your child’s school on the protocols and procedures for picking up a device. It is vital for everyone’s health that you follow the guidelines each school has in place for deploying devices. Each school’s procedure follows CDC guidelines for crowds and social distancing. Knowing that, please understand that picking up devices will take time, so please be prepared to wait in your car until it is your turn to receive a device. Your patience and understanding during this process is appreciated!

Since this is a new normal for everyone, I want to be transparent in this transition to online education. While we are prepared for this new model of instruction, I want all parents to know that, as with anything new, there will be bumps in this process. However, just like education in a traditional school setting, it is imperative that you work with your child’s teacher and principal as they quickly work to remedy any issues you may face. Communication will be key to making this work in the best way for you and your child. 

My message to our teachers and principals during this time has been to handle situations with compassion and grace. While I want our teachers and principals to work with compassion and grace in their hearts, I also ask that each of you handle your new normal with compassion and grace. Helping your children navigate the waters of this new normal might be, at times, uncomfortable. I ask that you treat yourselves, your children, and their teachers with grace and compassion. Allow mistakes. Learn from them knowing that our entire community will come out much stronger than we have ever been. I am confident that this new model will serve your children well until we can reunite back in our physical schools.

In addition to preparing for the online education model, we have been working on expanding our Feeding Program.  Last week we provided over 1,200 meals a day, and we expect that number will rise in the weeks to come.  To prepare for that, we will be adding feeding sites across the district beginning March 25th. Moreover, we will be expanding the use of busses to deliver food to bus stops for families who cannot get to feeding sites. More information will come out on Monday regarding the additional school sites and bus stop locations.

For parents who have high school aged children, we know that you have many questions.  Please be sure to reach out to your child’s teachers, guidance counselor, and administrators, as they will be able to help. Unfortunately, some questions still do not have answers as only time can tell. I can assure you that as we are provided guidance and timelines, I will share them. While I recognize that many of you are still left questioning the viability of prom, athletic events, field trips, honors programs and more, I can only say that these events are currently cancelled until further notice. While AP and IB have announced their solutions to the 2019-2020 testing situation, we still await word from AICE about their solution to testing.  Simply put, we are all doing our best to give high school students the “experience” they expect from high school while in the midst of a pandemic.  

As it pertains to graduation for the Senior Class of 2020, only time will tell whether we will be able to celebrate this monumental occasion at the end of May. What I can assure you is that we will have a graduation for our seniors. They have worked too hard for this moment and we will not deprive them- or you- of this. While I might not be able to tell you what graduation will look like, I can tell you it will happen.

I fully understand that these are uncertain times. As your Superintendent, I simply cannot express how proud I am of our teachers, staff, and administrators who have worked throughout Spring Break to ensure the best educational environment for your child. Similarly, there have been those behind the scenes, the district staff, who have worked tirelessly to support our schools with the goal of resuming instruction on March 30th. This has been no small feat, and yet all parties came together to guarantee that your children’s educational goals were not stopped in the face of a global pandemic. Finally, I am beyond proud of the students who are dealing with this historic change that has upended the routine of their lives. While some students have mentioned their hesitation to begin this new normal, some have been excited to continue their education at home while staying healthy. Regardless of the emotion, I am so proud of each of our students and I say to each of you… we will get through this together.

Parents, please stay tuned for the information you will receive this week and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your encouraging messages, prayers and support.  Okaloosa is the best because of the community we live in and I am thankful!

The Okaloosa County School District wants to share important resources regarding the Coronavirus and information regarding keeping children healthy:

Dear Elliott Point Families: 
 
In light of the current situation regarding COVID-19, and in efforts to reduce the spread of the virus in order to
protect our community and beyond, Governor Ron DeSantis made the decision to close public school campuses
until April 15th, and possibly beyond. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution and as a preventative
measure to limit the spread of illness in our community.  
 
Due to COVID-19, public education is going to look very different for the near future.  The good news is, LEARNING
WON’T STOP!  Our school district is shifting to online learning, and “school” is in session beginning Monday, March 30th. 
I want to assure you that we are working diligently to ensure that we have the resources available to support our
students and employees through these challenging times.  Very soon, you will have the ability to let us know how
best we can support your student with technology during the transition to e-learning.  Please know that we are here to
support our students and families navigate this new type of learning. Your student will still have their teacher, just
electronically!  You will be able to communicate with your teacher, and all ESE and remediation teachers they see.  
Communication is key as we move to virtual campuses.  Messages are posted on the Okaloosa Schools website
(https://www.okaloosaschools.com/), Elliott Point’s website (https://www.okaloosaschools.com/elliottpoint/),
Facebook (Elliott Point Elementary Events and Spirit Page), and through district and school call outs. To receive

                 Information for Families regarding Novel Coronavirus COVID-19

                              Updated Tuesday, March 10, 2020

With Spring Break beginning March 13, are there any recommendations from the School District regarding student travel?

Travel to Level 3 Countries

We encourage all of our families to be aware of travel advisories to certain countries put out by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and of the best practices for illness prevention from the Department of Health. Accordingly, anyone returning from a country that is Level-3 on the advisory list (China, Iran, Italy, South Korea) is subject to a mandatory 14-day self-isolation. Students should not return to school and employees should not report to work until the 14-day self-isolation period has ended.

Cruises and Travel to Level 2 Countries

Based on discussions with the Department of Health, those who go on a cruise or travel to a Level 2 country (Japan) should monitor their health for 14 days. Students may attend school and staff may come to work following Spring Break if they are exhibiting no symptoms of respiratory distress (cough, shortness of breath, fever).With either travel to Level 3 countries or cruises and travel to Level 2 countries, if you become symptomatic, immediately self-isolate and contact your health care provider to advise them of your symptoms.

If I choose to keep my student home as a precaution, will the absences be excused?

The Department of Health has advised the School District that the risk of infection remains low in Florida. However, if you decide to keep your child home, the absences will be excused provided you notify your child’s school citing the reason for absence. We will continue to review this exception as more information becomes available. Please stay in contact with your child’s school.

Are any field trips or athletic events being cancelled by the School District?

At this time, field trips and athletic team competitions will go on as scheduled. We are reviewing all field trips and athletic events and will notify families of any changes. We will continue to work with The Department of Health and provide updates as needed. According to authorities, there are currently no travel restrictions in our county, state or nation. As further information becomes available, the District may move to restrict travel to certain areas of increased risk or for field trips to areas where large gatherings will be present.

How is the school district working with military families coming to the area from overseas?

The School District has reached out to our military partners to provide information on school enrollment restrictions for anyone entering from a Level 3 Travel Notice country. If families are subject to a 14-day self-isolation, the School District will work with families on an individual basis to ensure continuity of educational services.

How can I get additional questions answered?

Please continue to check our website at www.okaloosaschools.com along with the Department of Health at www.floridahealth.gov . The District has established an information hotline for parents for school-related questions. The number is (850) 833-5819 and will be available beginning March 10.

Information, including false information, about the Coronavirus (COVID – 19) is spreading throughout our community. I wanted to take a moment to share with you what we know and assure you that we work hand in hand with the Department of Health in Okaloosa County in all areas related to student health.

We spoke with Dr. Karen Chapman, Director of the Department of Health in Okaloosa County, this afternoon (Wednesday, February 26th), and she assures us there are no confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in Okaloosa County or in Florida. We also met with Dr. Chapman and other Department of Health staff yesterday, and their professional, ongoing recommendations for our schools to prevent the spread of ANY flu-like illnesses are being actively implemented in our schools.

All school operations are continuing as normal. We will continue to keep you updated should there be further developments.

Our district is on a continuous journey to make our schools the best places for students to learn, staff to work and parents to send their children for a great education. In this effort, we appreciate your support. It is important to gather feedback from you to celebrate successes and identify areas for growth. Please take a few minutes and complete this Parent Satisfaction Survey to help provide this feedback.

Once the survey is complete, the results will be analyzed by an outside organization. The data from the survey will be returned to the District to be shared with each school, its parents and the community.

The Okaloosa County School's Parent Portal provides timely student performance information parents need to stay fully

involved with their child's academic progress. Go to www.okaloosaschools.com and click on  PARENTS/STUDENTS at

the top of the page.

 

ACCESS

To access your student's grades, you will need a UserID (Student Number) and password. If you have lost or do not know

your UserID and password, you can obtain one by completing the MIS 4339 Form and returning it to your child's school.

If you should have any questions concerning your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher. The student number

is on all report cards and progress reports you may have received previously.

 

EMAIL NOTIFICATION IS AVAILABLE  A feature within the Parent Portal allows parents to keep track of their child's grades

by email notification. Simply sign up for the email notification by clicking the “Set up Email” link after you log in to the Parent

Portal. A verification email will be sent to you and will contain instructions regarding the set-up process.

 

GRADES APP FOR IPHONE AND ANDROID USERS If you prefer using an App, you can access grades through the

 iOCSD App that is available for either iPhone or Android.  In addition to showing student grades, the App gives you the

ability to link directly to school calendars, receive notices of upcoming events at your student’s school and access school

contact information.  When you use the App, you will be prompted to enter your student’s ID Number and PIN only once.

  Parents are able to store multiple schools and students. (Pin is last 4 numbers of student ID)

 

KINDERGARTEN  We are in the process of developing a workable solution to using the electronic Gradebook in Kindergarten.

Our Kindergarten classes use a developmental checklist for reporting students’ progress. Putting this in an electronic format is

currently under review. In the meantime, please contact the Kindergarten teacher for information regarding your child’s progress.

Re: Healthy Schools, LLC Clínicas de vacunación contra la gripe

 

Lamentamos informarle que Healthy Schools, LLC ha descontinuado su

programa de vacunación en la escuela en todo el estado de Florida. En este

momento, no hay otras opciones para este servicio en la escuela en nuestra área;

por lo tanto, no podremos ofrecer las clínicas de vacunación contra la influenza

en la escuela en nuestras escuelas este año.

 

Recomendamos que todos los padres de nuestros estudiantes se comuniquen

con el pediatra local o el proveedor de atención médica de su hijo para

solicitar información sobre la vacunación contra la influenza. Si su hijo no tiene

un pediatra u otro médico local, el departamento de salud local proporciona vacunas

para los niños, incluida la vacuna contra la gripe, o puede visitar el sitio web del

buscador de vacunas contra la gripe de los CDC para localizar proveedores de

vacunas contra la gripe en nuestra área.

Important Message:

Elliott Point Families

Our number one priority is the safety of our  students.  Beginning

Monday, Aug. 19th, all students will be dropped off at the front

doors of the school upon arrival.  Parents and guardians will no

longer be  able to walk their student to breakfast or class.  This

decision is for the safety of our students.  If you have a need to 

enter the building for  a conference, pay lunch money, etc., you

will need to check in the office.  Please always bring your photo ID 

as it is required to check in. 

Thank you for understanding the need to be as sasfe as we can be

at Elliott Point!  This decision is supported by our Superintendent

and the School Board.

Volunteer Banner

Parents/Guardians:  After July 15, 2019, please go online

to www.Okaloosaschools.com and under the

volunteer tab fill out all the information so that when

school begins on August 12, 2019 you will be approved

to be a volunteer or chaperone.  It takes about a week

or two to get approved so please do not wait until the

last minute as you may not be allowed to go on the

field trip if it isn't approved.  If you require fingerprints,

it may take even longer so plan ahead and fill out this

form just in case you decide to be a volunteer or

chaperone at Elliott Point this upcoming school year. 

You must be approved each year! We will be having a

Volunteer/Chaperone/Mentor Orientation On September

17, 2019 from 5:45-6:15pm  and 6:15-6:45 pm during

open house. If you have any questions, please email

Attention Parents/Guardians:

Regular school attendance is one of the most powerful

ways families can prepare their child for success. When

children are absent for an average of just two days of school

per month--even when the absences are excused--it can

have a negative impact. These absences can affect children

as early as Kindergarten. Please watch this video for more
