Math Textbook Adoption Meeting Notice

PUBLIC NOTICE - June 13, 2022, School Board Meeting

THE SCHOOL BOARD OF OKALOOSA COUNTY, FLORIDA will conduct a Public Hearing pursuant to §1006.283 and §1006.40 Florida Statues to consider the recommended adoption of the following instructional materials for Math:

The Okaloosa County School District is participating in the state textbook adoption process in Mathematics K-12. This public hearing is for the adoption of the following materials as an alternate option should DOE not approve publisher appeals. A laddered recommendation process is being proposed based upon the results of the DOE appeal process. The publisher that is highest on the designated lists below, and approved by DOE at the conclusion of the appeals process, will be the recommended publisher for the corresponding course and grade span.

The following materials are being recommended pending budget allowance and pending resolution of the DOE textbook appeal process for publishers:

Mathematics for College Statistics

  • Savvas – Stats In Your World (Bock, Craine, Mariano, Velleman, De Veaux)
  • Savvas – Elementary Statistics (Triola)
  • Savvas – Elementary Statistics: Picturing the World (Larson)

Probability and Statistics Honors

  • Savvas – Stats: Modeling the World (Bock, Bullard, Velleman, De Veaux)
  • Bedford, Freeman, and Worth – Stats: Modeling the World (Bock)

Math for College Liberal Arts

  • Savvas – Thinking Mathematically (Blitzer)

The public is invited to preview the materials online via the Okaloosa County School District website. The direct link to the preview materials is https://www.okaloosaschools.com/district/2022/public-notice/math-textbook-adoption-meeting. Printed copies of the student texts being proposed for adoption are also available in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction located at the School District’s Central Administration Complex, located at 202-A Highway 85 North, Niceville, Florida. The public may make appointments to review these instructional materials by contacting Ryan Gore at (850) 833-4208.

The Public Hearing will be conducted during the School Board’s regular meeting on June 13, 2022, at 6:15 p.m., or soon thereafter as the matter may be heard. The meeting will be conducted at the School District’s Central Administration Complex located at 202 Highway 85 North, Niceville, Florida, in the Training Room. This meeting is open to the press and public. Those members of the public wishing to comment on the instructional materials recommended for adoption may appear at the Public Hearing and will be heard.

Any interested party who decides to appeal any decision made by the Okaloosa County School Board with respect to any matter considered during this meeting, will need a record of the proceedings and, for such purpose, may need to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made, which record includes the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is to be based. This notice does not constitute consent by the School Board for the introduction or admission of otherwise inadmissible or irrelevant evidence, nor does it authorize challenges or appeals not otherwise allowed by law.

Any person requiring special accommodation at this meeting because of a disability or physical impairment should contact the Superintendent of Schools at (850) 689-7185, prior to the meeting.

The following materials are being recommended pending budget allowance:

National Geographic Learning Cengage:

  • National Geographic Learning Cengage: Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for MATH Algebra 2 (regular and honors)

Savvas:

  • envision Florida B.E.S.T. Mathematics Grades K-5

Math Nation:

  • Florida’s B.E.S.T. (Grade 7 Accelerated)

McGraw-Hill:

  • Florida Reveal (Geometry Honors)

These materials were originally advertised on March 31, 2022, for a Public Hearing. Due to the state adoption process by the Florida Department of Education, the scheduled public hearing on these materials was delayed.

Math Textbook Adoption Update

Based upon recent Department of Education (DOE) action, Okaloosa County School District is currently examining the materials below to consider for adoption in elementary, middle, and high school math classes. Publishers being recommended to the School Board for adoption, and having current DOE approval, are notated beside their name as “Recommended for Adoption”. Publishers notated as “Recommended for Adoption Pending Approval” are awaiting DOE approval based upon requested changes. The elementary and secondary textbook committees will be reviewing materials to recommend as a backup option should DOE not approve the current recommendations.
