Destin MS Hosts Academic Tournament
Destin Middle School hosted a Middle School Academic Tournament on November 2, 2019. Okaloosa County School District Middle School academic tournaments are held each year, and each school is asked to host every other year. There are on average five Middle School tournaments throughout the year. The rest of this year’s tournaments are on January 25 at Meigs Middle School, March 7th at Ruckel Middle School, and April 25th (tentative) at Shoal River Middle School (co-hosting with Baker School). Laurel Hill and Davidson also co-host a tournament; they will do so next year. The public is certainly welcome to attend!
Lewis School, with Coach Kelly Yates as tournament director, also hosts a National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) which is open to all Middle Schools in the regional area. The NAQT tournament questions are a bit more rigorous, and top-finishing teams can qualify for the NAQT National Tournament.
Varsity teams are made up of students through 8th grade, and Junior Varsity teams are comprised of students in grade 6 or below. They play each other in a “round-robin” format whereby all of the Varsity teams play each other and the JV teams all play each other. Readers are usually members of the faculty and/or local volunteers from the community.
Every Okaloosa County School District middle school has an Academic Team, including Rocky Bayou Christian School and St. Mary’s Catholic School. There are also several Elementary Schools that have teams, and there are two Elementary tournaments this year! Bluewater Elementary School is hosting a tournament (date TBD) as well as Lewis School on April 18th.
There are no state tournaments for Middle School Teams at this time.
