Updated 7:39 pm, 10/9: "This is a school district safety update from Superintendent of Okaloosa County Schools, Mary Beth Jackson. Due to the proximity and strength of Hurricane Michael schools will remain closed Thursday, October 11th. School district officials will need time after the hurricane has passed to inspect our facilities and ensure they are safe for students and employees to return. We also expect some evacuees will still be sheltered. Please exercise extreme caution and be safe during this hurricane event. There will be another call out announcing when schools are ready to open. Thank you. Student safety is our top priority."
Based on the most recent forecasts and predictions by the National Weather Service in Mobile, all Okaloosa County schools and all school activities are canceled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The most recent forecast from the Emergency Operations Center predicts landfall between Navarre and Panama City. Some of our schools are designated as Red Cross shelters. We will make another call when school will be reopened. Please make the necessary plans for your family’s safety.
