STEMM Academy Speech and Debate

Sponsor: Paula Rogers

About Us:

The Speech and Debate Course is offered as an elective in the catalogue, but we also meet in the afternoons to practice our skills.  Interested students are always welcome to attend the afternoon meetings as long as a parent sends a note for transportation ahead of time.  Team meetings take place in room 14 on Tuesday afternoons from 2-2:30pm.

The Debate Teams compete in a wide variety of events including Congressional Debate, Public Forum Debate, and Lincoln Douglas Debate.  Our Speech teams compete in Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Oratory Speaking, and Storytelling.  Tournament points are entered into the National Speech and Debate Association's website and students receive credit for their hard work.  Tournaments are primarily held in Okaloosa County, but we are offered opportunities to attend travel tournaments in the surrounding states.

Advantages of Speech and Debate:

The class and after school program covers general public speaking habits, rhetorical strategies, logical fallacies, political philosophy, and Robert's Rules of Order.  Students learn the most effective ways to communicate in a professional setting.  Additionally, many students who go on to pursue this activity in the future are provided with opportunities for scholarships and cash rewards for their hard work.  The listening and critical thinking skills involved in this program set these children apart from other traditional students because they can quickly evaluate a problem and respond to it, while listening to the viewpoints of others.  Additionally, students foster relationships with those already in the speech and debate community, which greatly adds to their potential for success in this academic extracurricular.

Parental Involvement:

At the middle school level, parents are welcome to come to the events and watch the students.  Parents are also encouraged to attend our judge trainings and come judge tournaments.  We always welcome a helping hand with our tournament that we host each year at STEMM.  Please see the images below from our tournament this year.
