Choctaw HS Leadership Students Help Save Dunes

Choctawhatchee High School Leadership students recently participated in the 2012 Spring Dune Planting Project, which was sponsored by the Condo Alliance of Okaloosa Island. (CAOI).

Students were scattered among several area condos participating in the project, such as Cloisters, Emerald Isle, Emerald Towers, and South Beach.

“The students assisted in planting Sea Oats to help improve the environment and strengthen the dunes that protect upland structures,” said Becky McDonald, Choctawhatchee’s Leadership program sponsor.

There were nearly 20,000 sea oats planted over 18 properties on Okaloosa Island and Destin.   Planting sea oats improves the environment and strengthens the dunes that protect upland structures.

“After all of the sea oats were planted, the volunteers were provided a Bar-B-Q cookout at the Island Echoes condos,” said McDonald.
