Xavier Gibson, FWBHS, FHSAA State Weight Lifting Champion

Xavier Gibson, Fort Walton Beach High School, was recognized at the May 13 School Board meeting for placing first in the 2013 FHSAA 139 Weight Class State Championship.

“On behalf of our School District, we are very proud of you that you represented us so well at the State Championship,” said Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson.

Coach JC Cotton explained to the audience that weight lifting is a two lift event. The first is a bench press lift and the second is a clean and jerk lift.

“Xavier, who is 139 pounds, set the school bench press record twice this year and finished up (at State) lifting 295,” said Cotton.

Gibson lifted 255 in the second lift for a combined total lift of 550.

“Usually competition is pretty tough at State,” said Cotton.  “But Xavier won the event by 20 pounds.”

Congratulations Xavier!
