FWBHS Theatre Selected to Represent Florida at the SE Theatre Conference

The Fort Walton Beach High School Theatre Department won the Secondary School One Act Play Festival at the Florida Theatre Conference in Gainesville on Saturday, October 27, which qualifies them to represent the state of Florida at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Louisville Kentucky March 6th – 9th, 2013.

Each year, the seniors in director Christa Whittaker’s theatre class who plan to study theatre in college, choose and produce a one act play in addition to preparing audition material for college scouts.

This year, senior Isabel Rivera directed a one act cutting of William Missouri Downs’ comedy Kosher Lutherans, which focuses on the marital problems of two twenty-something Jewish couples in California. Kosher Lutherans received straight superior ratings, and will, along with Dr. Phillips High School, an arts magnet school in Orlando, represent the state of Florida at the regional festival this spring.

The play features Alexis Bass, Sean Royal, Helena Whittaker and Dakota Blankenship, and is run by stage manager Brynette Larranaga and technical director John Paprocki.

Sean Royal and Helena Whittaker were selected as All Star Cast members, and Helena Whittaker was awarded the Best Actress Overall award for the secondary school festival.

Kosher Lutherans will be presented on Thursday December 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fort Walton Beach High School Auditorium. Also on the bill that evening is Shakespeare 2.0, an original one act by Savannah Hagan and Helena Whittaker, which won the 2012 District One Playwriting Award.  Admission is $7.00, and all proceeds go towards the travel fund for the winning team.
