Michelle Heck Named Principal of Meigs Middle School

Michelle Heck was named the Principal at Meigs Middle School at the May 9, 2017 School Board meeting.

Michelle has spent the majority of her twenty year career in education right here in Okaloosa County and considers the Panhandle of Florida home.  Being from a military family, Michelle grew up all over the United States as well as the world.  After graduating high school in Virginia, she attended Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History (1996).  She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Human Relations from University of Oklahoma (2006) and a Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Grand Canyon University (2012).

Her first year of education was in 1997 at Choctawhatchee High School as a classroom assistant in a reading classroom as well as being named the Head Coach of the girls’ soccer program. After a year in that support classroom position, she was brought on board as an instructional faculty member where Michelle taught a variety of courses in the Social Studies Department including Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Programs and continued coaching the Big Green Indians until 2004.

Michelle rejoined the Air Force life when she married in 2004, at which time she spent two years overseas with her husband on assignment in the Azores.  Upon returning back to Okaloosa County School District and to Choctaw in 2006, she was approached by her principal, Cindy Gates to discuss leadership opportunities within Choctaw while continuing to teach in the Social Studies department.  It was with complete support and encouragement by her Leadership Team including Cindy Gates and Dr. Lee Hale, that she began her Masters in Educational Leadership.

In 2011, Michelle relocated with her husband to Anchorage, Alaska for his final active duty assignment.  While in Alaska, Michelle finished her final courses for her Educational Leadership degree, completed a semester long administrative internship in 2012 at Bartlett High School in Anchorage, and was named Assistant Principal at Robert Service High School in 2013.

In the summer of 2014, Michelle and her husband, Brian, celebrated his Air Force retirement and returned to their home on the beautiful Emerald Coast and Okaloosa County.  She was named Assistant Principal at Choctawhatchee High School where she has served the incredible faculty and students since.  Michelle enjoys traveling, reading, keeping busy with her young children, and fishing the Gulf of Mexico with her husband.  Michelle has been happily married to her wonderful husband, Brian, for nearly 13 years and has three young and active children: Thomas, age 9, who is in 4th grade; Abbigail, age 7, who is in 2nd grade; and Marilyn, age 5 who is kindergarten.
