Honors and Advanced Level Course Note: Academic rigor is not about the quantity of work. Through the application, analysis, evaluation, and creation of complex ideas (that are often abstract and multi-faceted) students are challenged to think critically and collaborate.

M/J Language Arts 1 Adv

The purpose of this course is to provide grade 6 students, using texts of high complexity, advanced integrated language arts study in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language for college and career preparation and readiness. Through the application, analysis, evaluation, and creation of complex ideas that are often abstract and multi-faceted, students in the advanced course are challenged to think and collaborate critically on the content.

 

M/J Adv World History

The primary content for this course pertains to the world's earliest civilizations to the ancient and classical civilizations of Africa, Asia, Europe, and Mesoamerica. Students will be exposed to the multiple dynamics of world history including economics, geography, politics, and religion/philosophy. Students will study methods of historical inquiry through the study of primary and secondary historical documents. The advanced course offers scaffolded learning opportunities for students to develop the critical skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in a more rigorous and reflective academic setting.

 

M/J Math 2 Adv, Pre-Algebra (7th and 8th grade Standards)

In this Grade 7 Advanced Mathematics course, instructional time should focus on five critical area: (1) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; (2) drawing inferences about populations based on samples; (3) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (4) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; and (5) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

 

Earth Space Science Honors

High School Credit: 1 (0.5 credit earned at end of each semester)

This honors-level course is an investigation into Earth and what makes it unique.  Students take an advanced approach to investigating the structure and composition of the earth, meteorology, earth processes, oceanography, geology, space exploration and astronomy, as well as Scientific Inquiry and the nature of science.  The academic pace and rigor will be greatly increased for this honors-level course work since this is a high school credit course. Laboratory investigations that include the use of scientific inquiry, research, measurement, problem solving, critical thinking, laboratory apparatus and technologies, experimental procedures, and safety procedures are an integral part of this course.  Laboratory investigations and activities in this course will provide students with opportunities to interact directly with natural phenomena and/or with data collected by others using tools, materials, data collection techniques, and models.              

 

M/J Research 1 Science Fair Project/Aerospace

Research: The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop basic knowledge and skills in the research process with emphasis on applying the scientific method to a current research project and report.  Course topics include: research process and topics; formulation of research questions and hypotheses; writing formal reports; investigating/analyzing data; critical analysis of research; definition, analysis, and evaluation of research questions; review of literature and other resources; completion of a major research project.

Aerospace & Aeronautical Engineering: Engages students in the history of Aerospace and Aeronautics as well as engineering principles through projects and explorations using inquiry-based activities.  The curriculum focuses on solving problems related to the science of flight and includes time in the flight simulation lab to enhance the principles learned during the activities.  This STEM-focused curriculum provides students with engineering challenges that promote collaboration, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and communication which are the foundations for developing the next generation of engineers and leaders.
