Military Families

Welcome to Longwood Elementary School. We are committed to providing critical transitional support for military-connected students as they relocate to our school due to a parent's change in duty station. Our focus is to eliminate barriers to the academic success of military-connected students. We are here to assist and support the military family lifestyle in such areas as school transitions, frequent moves, deployment, and education inconsistencies that exist from state to state, along with many others.

Longwood Ambassadors Student Transition Program

Longwood Elementary's Student Council helps facilitate our Longwood Ambassadors program, welcoming new military students to the school and community. Upon enrollment, new students are connected with an Ambassador who will take them on a school tour, help introduce them to their teacher, and be a welcome face as they get acquainted with Longwood Elementary School.

 Professional Development

Longwood Elementary School staff receive professional development concerning how to identify and respond to the needs of military students and their families.

Military Student Open Enrollment

Longwood Elementary School reserves at least 5% of controlled open enrollment seats, as defined in Section 1002.31, F.S., for military students.

Longwood Military School Events

We honor and celebrate our military families throughout the year in many ways:

  • September 17-23

    • Constitution Week - students will celebrate this week participating in a variety of activities to commemorate such as:

      • Celebrate Your Rights (Poetry/Song Writing; Grades K–12) Students will be able to recite the 52-word preamble in no time. They will be challenged to write a poem or song about another part of the Constitution, such as the Bill of Rights. They might also choose to focus on a particular amendment, like the 13th amendment, which ended slavery in 1865, or the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote in 1920.

      • Presidential Powers (Research; Grades 3–8)

Tell students that they will create a help wanted ad for the job of U.S. president, using details from the Constitution and sample help wanted ads.

  • November

    • Veterans Day Music Program - Parents are invited to come celebrate our military service members with patriotic songs and our school community.

    • Military Family Month - celebrates family service members of Longwood students and staff.  Students, Faculty, and Staff are invited to bring in photographs of loved ones who have served our country to be posted on our Freedom Wall in the main hallway and celebrated through the month of November.

  • April

    • Month of the Military Child: Weekly activities to celebrate the MOMC

    • Purple Up
Wear purple to celebrate military kids! Purple references the joint environment of the military, encompassing all service branches, Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, and Veterans. Purple combines each branch’s colors into one: the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard all use shades of blue, the Army uses green, and the Marines use red. MCEC® celebrates Purple Up this year on April 14th.
