Shiva McCraw was named Principal of Meigs Middle School at the April 25th Okaloosa County School Board Meeting. In her eleventh year as an educator, Shiva received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma. During her last semester at OU she took an upper level Childhood Education course and fell in love with the idea of following some of her family members’ footsteps into education. She quickly changed degrees and started her first year as a teacher in the fall of 2005.
Her first year of education was in a middle school as a remediation teacher in Atlanta, Texas. McCraw knew within her first year of teaching that she wanted to be an administrator. As an administrator, she wanted to impact not just her students but, teachers, community, curriculum, and instruction in a positive way. She finished her Masters of Science degree in Special Education and began her second Masters in Education Administration and received her Texas Principal Certificate all by 2008. After completing a year at Atlanta Middle School, she was given the opportunity to move closer to her family in Hooks, Texas where she took a position as a third and fourth grade inclusion/co - teacher.
It was in this position that Shiva received her first experience with administrative duties by being appointed as a Special Education Coordinator for the campus. In this position, she oversaw all of the Special Education Funds, curriculum, and instruction resources. In the summer of 2008, she took the opportunity to serve as an Assistant Principal for Farmersville Intermediate School in the Richardson, Texas area. After one school year as an AP, Farmersville ISD had her implement a brand new Special Education department for the district. She served two years in Farmersville as the Director of Special Programs.
In 2011, McCraw went back to her home of North East Texas and was given an opportunity to be the Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Hooks ISD and the Superintendents right hand lady. While serving in Hooks ISD she oversaw all departments including Human Resource, Teacher Evaluation, Instructional Technology, Special Programs, Curriculum, and Professional Development, and Federal Programs. While at Hooks she received her Texas Superintendent certification and started a Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership through Texas A&M – Commerce and is currently in the process of completing that program within the next couple of years.
Shiva had dreamed for many years that one day she would live on the emerald coast. She loved the area, the people, and of course the emerald waters. So she took the plunge and moved here in the spring of 2014. She has been with Meigs Middle School as the Assistant Principal since November, 2014.
